What is Laser Toning?
Laser toning is a technique that employs low-fluence laser emissions over multiple sessions to address hyperpigmentation issues, such as sun spots, uneven skin tone, and melasma. Rather than referring to a specific type of laser, laser toning encompasses any low-level laser treatment performed 5-15 times to achieve optimal results.
While this technique is commonly completed with a q-switched Nd
laser, it can also be done with a picosecond laser or intense pulsed light (IPL). The procedure involves short bursts of energy that penetrate the deeper layers of the skin to target and break down pigmentation, reducing blemishes, discoloration, and lesions. Because it does not damage the surrounding tissue or the epidermis, the risk of side effects is minimal, and there is no downtime required for recovery.
Is laser toning suitable for me?
Laser toning is a treatment designed to remove dark spots on the skin without harming the surrounding tissue or requiring any downtime. The primary goal is to even out skin tone and reduce hyperpigmentation.
Unlike other skin resurfacing methods, laser toning targets pigmentation in the dermis (the inner skin layer) while leaving the epidermis (the outer layer) unaffected. Originally developed for treating melasma, this technique has a lower risk of exacerbating symptoms or causing hypopigmentation, where white spots appear on the skin’s surface.
What is the process for Laser Toning treatment ?
After your initial consultation with Dr. Showrya Gadde, where your treatment area will be assessed and a plan will be made, Dr. Showrya will choose the most suitable laser for your needs. The settings on the laser will be adjusted for low fluence emissions (typically 1064 nm on a q-switched laser), and the handpiece will be applied perpendicularly to your skin. Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the treatment, though a topical numbing cream may be used to further reduce any potential pain. Each session lasts about 20-30 minutes and is usually done 5-15 times, spaced one to two weeks apart, for optimal results. After the procedure, it is important to use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to protect your skin from new or worsening hyperpigmentation.
What are the benefits of Laser toning?
Laser toning addresses a range of skin conditions and can be used for:
- Eliminating blemishes and hyperpigmentation
- Reducing melasma symptoms
- Erasing acne scars
- Improving skin tone
- Enhancing skin texture
Originally developed as a third-line treatment for melasma, laser toning is used when topical creams, sunscreens, and chemical peels are not effective. It is especially effective for dermal or mixed melasma, where pigmentation extends into the deeper layers of the skin. The treatment penetrates these deeper layers without damaging the epidermis, helping to break up pigmentation and reduce the appearance of dark spots on the skin’s surface.
